Black Copper Marans discussion thread

OHbig - that's not "too much" coppering in her hackles, though - it should go all the way around her neck. Seems difficult to get it to go all the way to the front, without extending down into the breast, though - at least in my experience.

ETA: I like that gal - she has a nice, long back - it's one of the things I'm working on in my flock this year. If you don't want her, send her over to me, okay?

Well...she is a keeper. I have been breeding for longer backs and wider breasts. I believe she will get more copper around the front still, there are a few you can't see in the photo. I also like her disposition she is very calm and sweet. She was from a hatch of 60 and I kept two. Her and a blue copper roo, he is from the same father and his copper is slowly coming around too. I agree it is hard to get it all the way around without having it "drip" down the breast.

I have hatched over 200 chicks this year and so far have only chosen 22 to keep until they are old enough to really decide. But I am doing better than last year, I only kept 12 of the 400 I hatched or ordered as chicks.

It's the gold vs. silver that makes BC not plain birchen. And the mahogany darkens the gold to the red copper color. If you want the beetle green black, then stick with the gold, and don't worry about whether or not they carry mahogany. It is not supposed to make much difference on a melanized extended black bird. The challenge of making blacks from cuckoos (if you're aiming at SOP) is that the barring clears the shanks, so they need the ID gene from one of the other non-barred varieties to help lighten the shanks to the proper color once you lose the barring. Going from ER to EE makes the shanks harder to clear up, but you should be able to get them to a medium bluish slate with the ID gene.
