Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Then don't worry about getting rid of ER. Lots of black birds are ER based. Ameraucanas and Leghorns - the black variety is based on ER. Breeding your darkest birds should get you black within a couple generations.

I'm putting in a batch for myself this week and then back to filling egg orders....I realized that I have sold all the little chicks and I have only kept a few for myself. 3 Blue Coppers (3 mos. old, 2 of which are showing some nice copper color but not enough

) and one Black Copper pullet (3 mos old and not showing any copper yet
barnie.gif
) and one Black Copper male who is showing some copper but boy o boy does he ever have a short lowridin' build to him...complete with a shorter leg, he's actually very small...not my cup of tea, so I don't think he will be staying...the next couple months will tell his tale. Ohhhh....I almost forgot the 3 little 2 week old Blue Coppers that I have in the brooder that I kept for myself too.....2 pullets and a roo.

Needs me some more layers.....as I am now down to 6 Black Copper females (I am not happy with 3 of the girls egg color at current...hoping they darken back up with some nicer weather on the way or they are moving into the laying flock.)

I need to get crack-a-lackin' and hatch me some babies.

I have two I believe pullets from you that I would consider low riders. They are Gnarles and a BC. They are such a different build with short little very feathered legs. I need to post some pics to show you. I think their beak and face are too dark. Looks all black. They are very cute my little Hobbits.

Hopefully they are girls so I can see what color of egg they will lay. They are showing a little bit of copper now also.

My small guy is from Gnarles and a BCM too, one of the 3 month old Bl-Cpr pullet that I kept is from the same cross and she is also a lowrider. Our most wonderful Geebs would love them!!!!!!

I'm pretty excited this morning my Blue Copper babies are hatching my first from Splish I had my early bird last night and I have some Golden Cuckoos hatching with them also. I so cannot wait to take them out and I hatched one from my Delaware hen that is with them I'm hoping to get a girl to check out the egg color from Splish it should be sex linked so I can tell right away.

Slate on the bottoms of the feet too? Mine have usually had at least part of the foot be pink. But legs change a lot in the first couple weeks. I wouldn't worry yet.

X2 I have some that are still really juvenile that had a great deal of pink on their legs and feet and now mostly slate except the bottoms of the feet.

Line breeding is done frequently with the marans. . . . mothers to sons and grandsons or fathers to daughters and granddaughters.

Others have no problems buying eggs or birds and mixing lines. Both school of thoughts have their fans.

Thank you! I guess I am going to embark on my first incubating adventure!
