Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I would LOVE to see video! My friend Andrea has a two year old that LIVES to toss scratch to the chickens. The second cutest thing he does is try to wrangle a big ol' halter, as big as he is, and a leadrope like an anaconda out to the fence so he can poke his nose through and yell "HO-Seeeee!!! HO-SEEEeeeee!!!" to the minis, that are total cuteness in their own right. DO (when you feel up to it and have time of course) post the video! For now milk it for all its worth and get waited on hand and foot for a few days, more if you can.

If his wife waits on him hand and foot I'll never forgive her.

Don't worry... I was the one getting up all through the night to change diapers and bring the baby to mommy who was recovering from c-section. The little man's got his days mixed up with nights, and was not wanting to sleep at night, though he sleeps like a rock during the day. Then I got to drive 2 hours to quickly check on the chooks and then pick up the in-laws and my 2yo and bring them back (another 2 hours) to visit. Thank God someone could bring them back home for me!

I'm pooped. But I wouldn't trade places with the one in the hospital bed right now.

Funny that is the way I feel too. I do still worry about the chickens I sell because I am just like that. I try to only sell to people that seem like they will do fine but you never know. I am careful who I sell to as much as I can be I don't feel bad turning pople away.

I took in way to many rescue dogs and horses to ever breed either of them. I also have a large family so everyone gets a nicely dressed chicken/duck or turkey during the holidays to take home. Last year I raised 4 broad breasted white turkeys two for Thanksgiving two for Christmas great idea if you have ever priced organic/free range turkeys in the store. Those monsters got up to 16 and 18 pounds on the hens and 24 and 26 dressed for the Toms.

Ok chicken question, eye color how genetic is it? AND have you ever seen one thats eyes change colors? I have a roo that started out as a orange/red eyed roo but now his eyes seem lighter almost pearl. I am also seeing very dark to light green eyes in my chicks and I want the Crazy red Marans eyes.

It's hard work being a chick.

This is my Black Copper pullet that decided to go broody 3 days ago....as you all know I don't have too many patience for a broody, though I do love broodies and love watching them, I didn't have patience this time to put any eggs under her, so I gave her some 3 week and 2 week old babies 24 hours after she went broody. She loves them...she doesn't love me too much for being in her space but she sure loves her babies.

The pearl eyed male you refer to is likely related to Lucosis and could be a survivor from Mareks disease. Most poultry people cull and will not breed the light eye fowl.

OMG that's so cute. Even though I'm all broodied out over here -that is the cutest pic! I know what you mean about not getting in 'thier space', I have those two broodies that hatched thier chicks together in the same nestbox watching thier chicks together like an evil pair sentries! Heaven forbid, I wanna get near thier pen to do something like ...give them water or food. They both straight out attack me. I have bite marks on my feet and wrists! It would be okay if it was just one...but do not mess with two broody mamas LOL!

Looking at my most hopeful prospect for a roo this morning I noticed something.

He appears to have fuzzy feathers on the middle toe. Now this is a DQ isn't it?

Is this something that would be passed on? Has anyone had experience with this in breeding? I plan on getting more stock still, but this is my best breeding prospect so far. Is this something I may be able to work with? What do you all think?

Would it be possible to see a picture of the feathered middle toe / We have been going over this a good bit the past few days. Most I have seen with this fault were usually heavier feet feathered. I would say this and it probably goes against everything that has been said before. If I had some female with little or no feathering on the feet I would test breed this male if he is good everywhere else and see what you get. Do not breed him to heavy feet feathering females.

Revised to ad. After seeing the chick picture below would not breed this male at all.

This was the product of a clean legged hen and a lightly feathered roo. I am amazed at the vast differences you see.
