Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I have a darker male with the mahogany that has orange eyes and also some over melanized females that have orange eyes too.
I have one too light of male that has yellow eyes lol but when I mated him to a dark female with orange eyes his offspring threw a nice male a little on the dark side (but not too dark) that had correct orange eyes. Marans are like a box of chocolates LOL ..so many genes at play!

All of my over melanized birds have orange eyes. Even Pip, who has that golden Hulk Hogan type of hackle has lovely eyes. My two dark boys have really nicely colored eyes! I would call them the true "Reddish Bay". Thanks for one thing going right around here!

Do their eyes change color at any point? I have a roo who's still super young and almost all of his white has gone and he's starting to look like he might be really fab SQ but his eyes are slightly green. If not I'll be very bummed. He's going to be a super STUD!

Bravo - FIRST of all, EXCELLENT pics. These pics are taken at the right level to really be able to see this bird.

The first thing that catches my eye about this guy is those white (or silver) feathers in his breast - am I seeing this wrong? Many of these birds, some of think, carry diluted Birchen...it makes me wonder when I see those few stray white/silver feathers. Maybe it is just still some down? Shouldn't be at this age...maybe I'm not seeing it right...

For me, it's way too early to tell much. He's got some white shank/foot feathering, which I believe Don is culling for. I personally believe that is replaced by black when they have their juvie molt, but I am no expert.

So far, looks like his tail angle is good. Comb has one too few points from what I am seeing - it's a good closeup, and I see 4 points. But, comb point issues are a very small deduction (I believe just 1/2 a point).

I would have liked to see just a bit more color at this age, but again, it varies so much from line to line, it's hard to tell.

I'm super curious to see how this guy matures! Thanks for sharing pics!!

Let's play the dating game . . . .

From the P1 generation = == =

Don look at this marans fanny.. .. . . It is beside my favorite hatchery SS.
My hatchery SS that you said was too narrow has more junk in her trunk than this blue copper marans does - - SAD really SAD

Here is a better look at this lady's profile

I try NOT to hatch anything from this one. . . . Her egg is all jacked up. She lays it on the dirt and it has a nasty calcium deposit on it. She doesn't lay that often AND she has three tiny white feathers above her one eye. I keep her so that the roo has some company when I am trying to isolate the rest of the girls for eggs.

The NEXT REJECT from the P1 generation is my one and only BLACK copper marans.
She produced only boys the first two hatches and I just have not gotten brave enough to try a third time with her.

Oh, and she is the one who can fly over my four foot fence too. . .. To me that means she is NOT big enough!

LAST hen from P1 - - - that is right I am using two Blue Copper marans to produce my pullets. .. .
The cockerels we are trying to decide from could be from either of these blues or the black copper marans hen. . .

There are only four pullets - - a lighter blue, a darker blue, a black with nice coppering, and a black with little coppering.
