Black Copper Marans discussion thread

My roosters usually have the bigger combs and much thicker legs than the hens. #2 looks like a rooster to me. But I'd also have to feel the leg thickness as well. The other two look like hens again depending on leg thickness.

Thanks - Yes, that's what I'm thinking. The legs do feel a bit thicker, but then Chick 2 is just bigger anyhow. Any thoughts on the copper on the wings this early? Would a pullet have that?

I agree about #2, cockerel. Absolutely NO idea if my experience is typical or not (and I only have 6 BCMs) but boys and girls were clear by 3 weeks (comb) and only my boys have copper so far at 7 weeks (back of the neck and chest). Copper started showing at 3 weeks. First one was crowing at 5 and a half weeks. All 3 boys are crowing daily now! It's a room full of testosterone, apparently!!!

My boys and girls have equal amounts of black and copper right now and had it as soon as they started feathering out. Except for one rooster (out of four) that has more of it. I think it also depends on what line you're working with. Not all are the same.

Funny, I looked at them last night and almost thought the same thing. I swear chick 1 started developing a comb during the day sometime, because I'm sure it looks slightly bigger than it did in the morning. I need to start having bigger hatches so I don't obsess over a single chick. What makes you say cockerel on chick 1? Chick 3 is definitely more petite than the other two.

There is a little tiny wattle starting to develop.... In another week you will know for sure!

NICE PICTURES - - REALLY GREAT JOB taking those up close shots!

Okay I have a few questions if that okay.
About 10-11 weeks ago I got my French Black Copper Marans.
They were babies. I got 29. I ended up with 14 roosters. They are getting loud.
I cant keep them all. We can only have 2 roosters tops maybe 3.
How to I reduce them from 14 to 2-3?
One thing is I have 2 that have a lot of white and black and green with very little copper.
One is more of a light grey/blue color and copper.
The other 11 are black with the copper markings.
So if you had to reduce them at this age what would you be looking for?
I am selling some and some will probably go to the freezer.
Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't really get to type much the other day, so I wanted to come back on. While I am still trying to read thru this thread it is Great! I just wanted to thank everyone on this thread for all the useful information that has been posted.

How old is he? I am really novice but I personally love the look of him so far............. Nice comb, I think it is short a point 4 instead of 5?, nice length of back and overall nice body balance, shank feathering hard to tell from pic but looks good and body colour looks like it is coming in nicely. Shank colour in the pic looks a little light but all I can really see are some of the tops of his toes, they look really pink/white
