Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Is it bad that I am having recurring nightmares of mistaking my BCM pullets first eggs for dog poo in the backyard and throwing them out?!?

Totally random, I know...

NO! Not at all. Since my girls have been free ranging, I have to watch where I step. They are laying them everywhere; wood pile, gravel driveway, in the grass, under the deck....guess it's time I made them some outside nests??? Dog poo??

well my bcm roo has clean featherless legs so i dont know if they will ever be up to sq but for me they are my back yard laying and dp flock but i really do want to learn what to look for and try to get as close to sop as i can and maybe in time i will learn what to keep and what to cull out but for now im trying to learn as much as i can so when they do start laying and i hatch a bunch out i will have some kind of ideas on what im looking for right now i dont even know at what age they do start to lay or how long after they start laying i should wait to hatch the eggs out at these are our first real flock of chicks i have had 2 laying hens back years ago but didnt have a roo that was back like 30 years ago i had them as full grown hens back then and when they got to old that they hardly ever layed anymore we brought them out to my grand parents farm and they were great brood hens they were new hamphire reds and my grand parents had a mixed flock of mutts till they had a fox come in and cleaned out the coop one night but out there my grandfather and my great grandmother always free ranged the chicken but they did get the fox that got the chickens the dog wouldnt let the fox out of the pop door and my grandfather shot it but it was too late for the chickens but i cant belive thats one of my memories from growing up i also can remember the rabbits that they raised they had a bunch of them but not for food they was just pets and after the fox did in the chicken my grand father turned all the rabbits loose and let them have the run of the yard and up till just a few years ago you could still find a rabbit or 2 around his place we knew that they had to have been from the ones he turned loose cause up here our wild rabbits are snow shoe hares not the big ones that he raised
