Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Could we get a chest view of # 2 the yellow band PLEASE....

At 10 weeks it is TOO EARLY to worry about any white.....
The age to worry is after 20 - 25 weeks....

Sure, I happen to have this one... It's not a great picture. I can try for some new ones tonight. So really, white in the wings is OK at this age? That's really good news because I was worried since they were the primary wing feathers. So he could lose them in a molt and maybe they'll come in black, huh? WOOO-HOOOO!

I can't complaint about the size I received as they were all extra large or jumbo except 1 medium egg which I figured was the extra. Also the eggs I received were pretty dark. I have just PM'd the seller to inquire about the yellow shanks.

I'm glad you decided to do that... maybe the seller doesn't even know their stock carries, or they just switched roosters. There's a really cool Wheaten Marans breeder on BYC who just found out his stock carries yellow, and his flock has been closed for 2 years... so even careful breeders can have surprises in their flock. Let us know how they respond, and if they compensate somehow.

x2 I would like to hear what they have to say, I can only imagine what the marans have way back in the gene pool waiting to come up.

Hey friends, I am wondering where the really dark eyes are coming from in my pullets and cockerels? It looks like I will be heavily culling (as meat birds) both genders and their eyes are so dark they are almost black. Any comments, suggestions etc?

I wouldn't worry about the white in the wing yet, but I would worry about that heavily coppered chest.

More than 10% copper in the chest is a DQ.

I have quite a few almost 3 month old girls that still have very dark eyes (almost black). I'm not too worried as I've noticed my birds tend to change later. I have a 9 month old pullet that JUST finally got that pumpkin color in her eyes. They went from dark brown to a greenish yellow then to the pumpkin color. Hope this helps

Good Evening! I think this got lost in all of the lovely pictures today.........Anyone knowledgeable in leg feather genetics?

I'm not an expert but I would imagine that breeding them to sparse or clean legged partners would correct it at least for some of the chicks....

Look up VillageChicken's posts. I believe he posted an awesome genetics overview of shank/toe feathering a few months back on the Marans thread. It was WAY over my head though
