Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Smith poultry supply sells them. I made one out of the heavy wire that reinforces the top of our woven wire field fence. The field fence is too flimsy itself, but the top and bottom wire are just right. The wire is a little crooked, but hey... it works.

So interesting that this came up on the thread at this point. I haven't been on in ages - just not home or on the laptop... but I just tried this the other day, with wire, and it must have been too thin - totally didn't work with any of my stronger roosters - they just kicked it off.

But I was wondering if anyone has ever used one of those grabber things that snake handlers use that has a padded "pincher" at the end and a squeeze handle at the other - or those things that vertically challenged people use to grab things off high shelves... same idea. I've been thinking about looking for one, seems safer than the wire thing.

First of all he closely matched the Standard breed description. His most outstanding feature however was his condition. He was in absolutely perfect show condition which, in my experience, is unusual for Marans. Condition is worth a big 10 points & a poultry show is after all a beauty contest.

Legs especially. The day I see someone with a full grown cock with good legs and untouched leg feathers, wow, I'd love to see him.

My BC Marans chicks ( almost 3 weeks) are by far the least tame of all my current chicks. All the others (Comet, Australorp and Turken) come running when I bring food but the BCM chicks run to the far corner and hide. I thought they were more social than that?

Notice the sign in the background. They spelled marans incorrectly.

The roo looks pretty. Wish we could see a better picture of him.

I did note that.

Ok, so we got two marans. I was told they are both pullets. I know nothing about this breed. I am not breeding or showing, so it doesnt matter if they are standard to me lol, I just want me some chocolate eggs

BUT I do want to know if they are really pullets. Everyone in the gender section says they are bot roos. They came from a hatchery in Oklahoma. she swears they are pullets and said she will even trade them out if they are not. They are supposed to be 2 and 3 months, but I think they are 1 and 2 months. You guys are the experts. What do you think?

We'll call the big one chick-1 and the little one chick 2. Here are both of them

What do you think. Pullets? What age do you think they are?
Thank you!
