Black Copper Marans discussion thread

And, as far as blaming Storey's book, you can blame MPC for all the Pennes. They are pushing them as much as the Marans. Kind of, when Marans are sold out this week, you'll be just as happy with these! Same eggs! Just as dark! (never mind the crazy part)!

I feel that the buyer has EQUAL if not MORE responsibility to ask questions & do their research before buying

At last, something we agree on. Someone who has gone to the trouble of doing some homework before jumping in is hard to cheat.

Ummm, I did it too. My first birds were EE, leghorns, and marans. "Why such a mix?" you may ask. Blame Storey's guide is all I have to say.
I wanted the color eggs of the EE, Dark eggs from welsummers or marans, and just eggs from the leghorns.
I got my birds BEFORE I found BYC. I went to the library and read what I could and BAMM---- I was in chickens.

Martha Stewart is too blame for my choices. She had all those AWESOME egg colours ...

For me it started - all about the egg - and has become - hey, these birds are actually kinda cool. Maybe I should find out something about them!!!

I figured your did but maybe someone else reading this thread might not...

Ouch...I feel for you. I think I have scars on arms from being clawed by them....

Walt, they mixed them in because the Pennes lay very dark eggs as well. But the shells are matte,, not shiny, and my experience was the birds are nuts!

When I just walked by their pen, they would fly up into the air & bounce around like a ball in a pin ball machine! & God help me when I actually stuck my head into their pen for an egg, I ended up with them on my head.....I only had them for 6 months and got rid of them...

Sorry if there are any Penne breeders out there..

I know why they do it, but they should disclose that. My left hand is one giant bruise from handling the male Penne. Both male and female were nuts..they may have dethroned the lakenvelder in my mind as the whackiest birds.

Why didn't you give us a heads up on the marans thread? ? ? Lordy girl... I visit the marans thread (3 of them) , the ss thread ( 2 of them),
the delaware threads ( 3 of them), the canning and baking threads.....oh and my morning coffee thread. I don't have time to see any other posts...

DANG IT!

15,000 posts ? ? ? That is a lot of yacking girl!

Nice of you to do the contest.

I'm sorry! The breed threads are just more about breeding strategies, comparing notes, feedback/suggestions regarding cull choices, things of that nature. My yackiness thread is just a silly!

My first time judging Marans eggs was yesterday. That was pretty interesting. I think the APA should promote more of that. There seems to be a lot of interest and it is easier to ship eggs than it is to ship a bird to a show.

I have to find some gloves for judging. The problem is that I have to be able to feel the bird through them. The thing I hate most about getting old is that things that used to bounce right of my skin now open me up and I bleed like mad. Part of it is that I am also taking a blood thinner, but the skin is not nearly as thick as it was. I was also spurred by a SS Hamburg banty, but he was slow enough that I saw it coming and he didn't do much. I was not very careful taking him out after he did that. Technically I didn't have to judge him, but I hate to do that. After 30+ years of judging I have only refused to take out one bird. That was a white male Cornish LF that was remarkably fast for his giant size. He was probably the largest Cornish I have ever seen. (Lewis Strait line). There was no way I was going to wrestle with that guy.

NYREDS, where would you suggest new Marans people get the info. to keep from getting taken to the cleaners. I have yet to find anywhere that I could trust to give me the info. I would need before buying. When I started out I spent several thousand dollars on eggs that should of been eating eggs. Thr problem is there is just not that many dedicated Marans breeders that are selling eggs and adult fowl. The reason for this is that there is more buyers than there are sellers.

We should look at how many breeders were selling eggs for up to 150 a dozen two year ago and have now vanished. This is not just Marans either.
