Black Copper Marans discussion thread

When I saw the pic of your rooster I thought " sign me up for some of his eggs" Beautiful boy. I'm no expert, so I refrain from giving opinions. But he's lovely to me. ANd zippy, too. I get the name thing-- you should hear some that my boys use: Whitey (guess the color), Vultalina (think vulture), VUltalina 2, THe Police are 3 whitish EE . . . oddly they haven't named any of the marans yet . . . but then the 4 hens look exactly alike.

Thank you! Junior is really very special. Probably the nicest bird I have in the flock. I can't wait to hatch some eggs by him!

LOVE your name choices! But then again, I'm a big fan of the band The Police...

My senior roo, Junior's father, is Savage Henry. Named after a character in a Hunter S. Thompson novel. He does not live up to his name however... He is a very sweet boy. The rest of the flock is yet to be named. Still waiting for their personalities to really come out!

Naming the birds is certainly fun. I have named only a few. ANd my boys spent a lot of time playing with the chicks over the summer. THe white EE were the police, the lt tan the FBI and the darker tan the NCIS . It was really very amusing to see 2 little boys creating adventures and stories with chicks.

I like the theme you have going there! I have been thinking about an herb theme for the hens but Im sure that has been done a million times over... I need to think of a couple sassy names for my Barred Rocks hens. They rule the coop with iron beaks!

Should have welcomed you sooner!

I did the flower theme for my sheep! Lots of names to keep everyone ID'd. Went right down the alphabet each year the next letter in the alphabet. I quit at F. If it works, go for it, loads of neat herb names. Works better than tree names! Or presidents!

Ok. Need some feedback on this comb. What is it? LOL
I know I shouldn't use him to breed.
Sorry about the bad pic. Was using my cellphone to take the picture by myself.

Great photo--nice job despite a wriggling bird in one hand and camera in the other. I'm curious to know what this deviation is called too. I wouldn't use him for breeding either if I had a choice.

OK guys, haven't been here in quite some time, took pics of the younger roos (9 mos), some were gotten from a breeder in NC, some are homebred, some are local.

I don't mind the critiques at all, I'm not fully satisfied with any of them except hens ROFL....but they are stepping stones. I got the great color on two of the NC roos, but one is almost banty sized and the other is nice sized. My biggest BCM young roo is homebred but too much gold in his hackles but a lot of nice things about him.

These pics are on Facebook, so not sure if you can pull the album or not, it is *public*.

Also wound up with something that looks like a black birchen? as well as two blue silver birchens (one lighter blue, one darker blue)....again I know they are not top quality but gotta start somewhere? or just straight to the freezer/grinder?

Hi, actually there are three blue roos. Two are silver birchen blues and one is a copper blue. I don't think any of them are top notch, but gotta start somewhere and its almost impossible to find any blue birchen or quality blue coppers.

thanks for the kind words.
