Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Croad are supposed to.
"The 'plum' egg colouring is a bloom over the top of a pinkish brown shell. The darker brown the shell the darker plum the colour will appear. Some eggs have a white bloom but a good example will have a pale purple colour bloom over a darker shell. This is why the Poultry Club Standards list the egg colour as brown. " quoted from http://clarescroads.webs.com/eggcolour.htm
and heres a pic off some amazing ones...

oh those are beautiful!

Who knew I would kill a thread with pictures of purple eggs. Sorry.

Back to Marans! I love them so much more than I expected to. These little Ninjas are growing so well and just coloring in. Is that blue tint on the feathers the equivalent of beetle green on others?

I think the purple eggs are pretty.

I tried to hatch some black coppers from shipped eggs, but no luck this year. Too bad, I was really wanting some dark brown eggs.

(anyone in Kasas want to sell any hens?)

I have been in here a few times but have to admit I am pretty new to owning this breed-- THANK YOU blackbirds13!!! I love them. I didn't mind taking roos. I still don't. If they grow up enough to get personalities I like I can keep them. If they grow up not to, well, they taste like chicken to me!

So, this is what I want to know: where do I find the standards for these birds WITHOUT spending 75$ on a book that will be changed and reprinted in six months??
In looking at these little cuties, some have much more black in their faces, other more of a lav color. The kids call one Skeletor!
What, if anything, does this indicate?
Can anyone recommend a breeder site?
Sorry I'm late to this .....Don't buy the new SOP to find Marans because they aren't in it. They were not approved before the book was printed....Goto http://www.marans.org/
the standards are on the website.

The French Marans site states that the
"green/blue" tint to the feathers on a black copper are not desired. They want a matte looking feather. They feel that that beetle green is indicative of over melanization. I've found that to be true.

Quote: THe SOP is far more than just the marans SOP. THe basics are there, and from what I understand loads of pictures to help with understanding . It is only revamped every 10 years, so the SOp for the marans is currently online, BUT it will be printed as an insert for inclusion at the back of the book along with several other birds recently accepted. The book is well worth buying if you want to be a serious student of breeding chickens. I have it on my Christmas list.

No argument but will state what the SOP says about most black on our chickens should have a loustrous Green sheen. What the French standard says has no bearing on the Marans in the USA that will be showed in an APA Show.
