Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Here is my fbcm roo. His name is Willie. Im hoping he drops the white tail feathers when he molts. He is about 19weeks now. I think he is a little over colored but i like him none the less. He is the top roo in our flock. We have 3 other roos at this point and he keeps everyone in line.

One thing I have recently learned was check the under feather fluff. If the birds base feathers are white the chances of him growing more white is probably inevitable. If he's black all the way down you have a good chance of it going away.

I've been working at it for several years now, have wasted money on birds from supposedly *top breeders* and wound up with dog food birds.

I have gone through probably 6 generations already and this last batch, have some hopefuls but of course, won't know much until they are grown up etc., and producing.
I hear you there. The truth that I have been finding out is there is not one breeder out there that can put out a bird without faults. Just not going to happen. The breed is to new and the Marans have influences from other breeds. So basically the way I understand it there is a difficult time ahead for us breeders. Good luck on your endeavors.

Thanks and nice boy. At 19 weeks I wouldn't sweat a few white feathers, not yet! My best roo, down from stock I brought in from east coast, retained not only white tail feather but hackles underneath were white.....he had everything else I wanted.....but that white would not go a way =(

These are two of my 6 week old BCM's. Bought them from a local breeder a month ago. They have grown pretty fast. I have four in all but these are the oldest. I'm sure they are not and will never be show quality birds but just wondering what everyone's opinions might be on their color, shape, etc so far. I've not found that first speck of white on any of them. The other two are 4 week old pullets. I know it's hard to tell because of their age. We'll be moving them to their new home in the outside coop this weekend.

Will say they appear to have nice shank and foot feathering. The female has some nice copper in the hackle area. The male will be to much color most likely. They are really too young to tell much about them. The Comb on the male may change once they are outside.

Here is one of our latest batch hopefuls, approx. 20 weeks old. .

Here is a near year old male, a friend in France has him, its their last Marans. She said they'd hatch babies and they'd live about 6 weeks and then die, so they stopped breeding BCMs. I would love to smuggle this bird

. She also said they got very dark eggs. I asked chocolate colored or terra cotta red-brown color. Chocolat', she replied.

We found a home for our Maran roo, I'm sorry I haven't updated this thread sooner. He's very happy in his new loving home. Thanks for the help!

ok i posted pics of our marans rooster a while back and most said he was mixed with most likely wheaten. i have hatched several chicks from him and most were black when hatched (the one cockerel i have now has way to much red like his dad) but then one just hatched out about 10 mins ago and looks like this (dont mind the 2 bantams in the back). does this look like it's a wheaten color? i will post another once the chick is dried off more. i do know this does means our black coppers are mixed. so with that does anyone have some nice dark pure marans eggs for sale and if so can you please send pics of what the eggs look like and your stock thank you. (this one hatched out of a nice dark egg)

Ahhh, the math of genetics, you can have a hundred blacks, and that 1 off color tells a different tale. I'm hoping snowbird or a much more experienced person than I can confirm your suspicions.
