Black Copper Marans discussion thread

It's on, or rather will be on, page 31 with cutting for defects: Langshans, Faverolles, 1. Feathered middle toe -- each 1/2 to 1 1/2. The DQ is only for clean legs.
I have been to two APA shows in the last year. The first one in Stevenson, WA, Best of Breed was a Black Copper Marans Hen who had middle toe feathers. The Spring PNPA show in Salem, Oregon, Best of Breed was a Black Copper Marans Cockeral who had middle toe feathers. I talked the owner into selling him to me

. My original breeding pair were both free of middle toe feathers but both fairly heavily feathered all the way down the outside toe. 35% of their offspring had middle toe feathering. I sold them all at hatch as "pet quality' and explained to people why. I figured that was an easy thing to cull for. Now I am re-thinking my breeding program and will be breeding the new cockeral to my original hen and a few of her daughters and see what happens.

Does your new bird have some qualities that are lacking in your others?

Awesome - thanks!! I could have sworn....but good to know. I seriously need to start carrying my SOP with me. I would have no issues using one to offset poor shank feathering in the partner bird, but I don't know that I'd show one. This is good to know!

You must be VERY convincing!!

Very much so. Better overall shape, colour, comb......... My original pair was producing quite a few U back shaped pullets and not enough colour on the pullets. Hopefully the new cross will correct most of what was missing but as we all know, it could also open a can of worms!! I will only single mate so I will know who is producing what. Will not be breeding the original pair again, I hatched about 75 chicks from them last season and pretty much know what they produce.

I just bought a BCM Roo and the only thing I found wrong with him was he had middle toe feathers. When he is out of Quarantine I will test him with correctly feathered and lightly feathered pullets and see what I get. I would love to put him with my original black copper hens to have a BLACK COPPER LINE with no BLUE influences. Just to see what I would get. My new roo has great color, nice and even COPPER.... in the sun it is SOOO Pretty. He has a nice comb, no white feathers or under fluff, no stray copper, good eye color, I just couldn't find anything other than the middle toe feathering so I bought him with a pullet.

I am just getting started with BCMs. I have six young hens, three adolescent roos, six pullets and and now fifteen freshly hatched chicks from purchased eggs. Two of the mature hens have what I think is too much copper down the breast area. About how much copper is best down the neck?

0% is BEST but some is allowed not sure how much since a % is not in the SOP.
