Black Copper Marans Eggs on eBay

Quote:
I've bought BCM stock from over a dozen breeders, including eBay and from this website. Out of those, maybe three breeders are selling stock that really shows an understanding of the breed standard and some discipline in maintaining it. The rest had a lot of junk DNA.

Here's my prediction, which easily could be wrong: Marans peak in price in 2009, the bubble deflates. A year from now you'll be able to buy an egg for $2. Five years from now you'll buy the same egg for $2, but the quality of the bird will on the average be much higher.

Here's the support for my thinking: Right now between 100 and 200 eggs per month are being sold on eBay at high prices. This is largely driving the market. A single hen lays about 200 eggs a year, and they start laying at about six months. Many of the eggs being sold right now will, by next summer, be producing eggs of their own. The supply of available eggs will explode by a factor of more than fifty, and the demand will not keep pace. Prices will drop. Fast and far. People who were in it for the money will get out. People who were in it because they like the breed will continue to improve their breeding stock, selling them at reasonable prices.

The Black Copper Marans prices have been steadily going down on eBay in the last two months. There are a LOT more people selling the eggs for one thing, and I think, like Stoneunhenged says, the bubble is on the edge of breaking.

This particular auction though is for eggs from bayhorsebonne, who is very reputable and who has a history of providing very nice eggs that hatch very nice chicks.

[I have some marans from her stock - not the black coppers though, no way would I pay that price! These are excellent marans though that I got from her].

So, my guess, for today, is that it is a combination of the fact that she is offering her eggs for auction again [she hasn't in a long while] AND some folks got some Christmas money that is burning a hole in their pocket [because these eggs are going for WAY more than they were in the last month - 6 were going for more like $10-15 each earlier this month....

So, it looks like this combination means bayhorsebonne is going to get a nice Christmas gift too!

The Ostrich craze is a perfect example. Birds that were selling for $85,000.00 a pair in the 80s can't be given away today.

Mothergoose, similar to what millebantam said, your eggs are just as good or better, but if you read the other listings closely you will see that they state their egg pics are at the "beginning of their laying cycle." However, when the buyer receives the eggs they see that the eggs are not as dark as the auction listed. Your pictures are from your eggs after their beginning, like the pic you took of your eggs today. It is incredibly honest of you to show those pictures now and in your auctions, and your not mis-leading by saying what you had in the beginning of your cycle. In the end, a buyer is 99% more likely to come back to a seller that is honest from the beginning then a seller who sold 9's and delivered 4's.

If all sellers were as honest as you, the world would be a better place.

You're the best. Thank you. I feel better.

Merry Christmas! Do you think I should explain that in my listing? Thanks for your input!

and it wouldn't hurt to get some pics of your darkest, earliest pullet eggs and put those in your auction too. No shame in that either. Show people what they want to see. They want to see dark eggs. I almost bid on yours, but my bator is full right now, and I even put four eggs on top of the eggs in the turner, which will probably cook them, but WTH? Seven were supposed to hatch today, not a pip, but they are well dried out and should hatch okay. Just not today.

33 bids $224.

I just can't see it. That chicken better be laying golden eggs, lol.
Still if I had some I bet I would do the same. But I think that now there are so many people with black copper marans that by the time I bought some, hatched them and grew them to laying age, the price will have dropped considerably.
