Black Copper Marans

seller says "they are all from bev."
seller says "the bumps are from them trying stick their heads through the cages. and betting a bobo and it healing."
seller says "I have asked many people about the marans throwing light chicks but haven't got a concrete answer. To my knowledge they are wheatons. I do have some other wheatons but they are guaranteed wheaton marans."

hmmmmmm

It's difficult to tell properly in photos. I thought the wheaten looked redder than she ought to be, but that could be my computer screen which seems to be rather dark.
Look at these photos from the French site & compare.

These are the copper blacks. You'll see the nec hackles are a nice rich copper, this is caused by the mahogany gene.

Really, you can see your birds & compare with the photos put up on the official site as a guideline. That's the best bet.

Looks like either the parent rooster or hen was a BC Maran, but not both. I would guess a BC Maran mated to a Buff Orpington judging by the leg color and lack of feathering. Bev's birds look nothing like those. I would be upset with the seller.

i REALY wanted these for the egg color! i guess i'll have to wait and see on that....
i'm fine with having pet quality (i don't plan to breed or show), but i would hate to not have a good color egg.
hopefully i'll get some feedback soon from Bev. i sent her an email with pics. if nothing else, i'd like to see if the seller's explaination for the "bump" holds up:rolleyes:

I have 6 different BC breeders lines, and none look like these 2. I think these aren't pure BC's.
But, knowing that right after WWII the BC's in France were all but wiped out. The French had to import the BC's back from England. the English do not like Feathered shanks. So, that trait is still prominant in BC's. And I hatched some PURE FRENCH line BC's from Thom Deans line. And had a Cuckoo pop out. So, almost all these BC lines are heavily crossed within the past 50 years to rebuild the gene pool for BC's. It will always be there. In this case I believe some where the mixing of different varieties of Marans had been done more recently. Still nice birds, if they lay a dark egg you should still have some use for these birds.

here are two photos ... the first of a BC at about the same age and then a lousy photo of a wheaten, neck up only kinda in a center of the photo. They are Bev Davis birds at about the same age. No similarity from my viewpoint.

Good photos of each bird would be good.
Producing a Cuckoo from 2 BCs is a genetic impossibility

The Wheaten pullet is well within the normal colour variation for this variety,
the other one looks like a BC carrying Wheaten or is a cross bred.

the bumps don't look like avain pox, do they?
i started searching about illness (i have a sneezing/hiccuping cockerel) & i got freaked.
the marans seem healthy, but these bumps still concern me
one of the bumps bled last week....i assumed on of the cockerels had pecked it & caused it to bleed (these 2 girls are very low in the pecking order)
