Black coppers are not phenotypically brown, nor do they have Db (dark brown) genetically. Do they have autosomal red? Dunno....In any case, the label "brown red" is just about as arbitrary as any other label. It's only "correctness" lies in it being older than others.
 
LOL.....I think mahogany birchen would imply a different colour of bird to me.
Birchen is usually used to imply an ER bird with silver. The ER birds with silver & mahogany have creamy yellow hackles.

I often haven't a clue what colour bird people are referring to & frequently completely misunderstand.
