Black crested White Polish

Pics
I recently had the opportunity to acquire a Black Crested White Polish rooster; however, no hens of the same variety were available for purchase. As such, I am seeking advice on suitable pairings for him, given that hens of the same variety are unavailable. I am considering a poorly laced Silver Laced hen as a potential match, but would appreciate any guidance or recommendations on the matter.
That would be the best substitute.

Got chicks again. Two are buff, not white. Most from the person who got my flock. She has a blue crested buff hen, and the cockerel she ended up breeding was one who I assumed to be S/s.

One isn't from her- the patterned one. It'll help with genetic diversity.

Bottom two are, I guess, homozygous for the blue gene. I guess I'll see how they feather out as adults. Not sure what to do with the gold-based ones.

Will be using the buff pullet.

3 pullets, 3 boys.

Of the 3 pullets, the buff one is the only one with a larger rounded crest. All the boys are super good in crest size though. She also has the best pattern, besides the fact she's orange.
of the other two pullets, one is black crested white/blue crested white, who knows, but she's far over patterned. Still super speckled, but maybe she'll grow out of that. The other is blue, but she is silver-based, I can say that.

The unrelated chick is a cockerel, thank goodness. He's super dark, fingers crossed he lightens up with age though. Thinking of putting him over the blue and black crested buff pullets. Not sure about the black crested white one. If her pattern cleans up then yes, but otherwise no. Not sure what to do with the other two yet. Might use the white one for a few months to see whether his chicks have clean pattern. Don't think I'll breed the buff male yet but time will tell.
They're all very well-behaved though. Hoping they stay that way when they're older.

Also, it's nap time apparently.

Glad to see an update here!

Down to 2 females and 2 males. The gray one started developing male feathering, so even though it didn't act like a male or have wattle/comb development, I slaughtered it. Also slaughtered the orange male because I didn't want to go that route and needed to cut down on animals going into the Fall.

Still have the california boy and the white one- who is just a backup. Both males are well-behaved still. My last one, which was the grandfather of the white one, was a jerk. Looks like letting the cochin/silkie bantams raise them was a good idea.

Orange female ahould start laying sometime in the next few months. She's beginning to get wattle development. After she's laid a few eggs I'll set up a pen with her, the other female, and the california male and begin hatching out a small number of chicks to keep to myself. I might use the white male sometime in the future if this male doesn't make nice looking chicks, or use him for whatever daughters they produce.

I don't like their size. The females aren't much larger, and barely heavier, than my bantams, who they've been living with for the last few months. They stand a bit taller than my bantams, but are narrow animals and are quite light to hold.

I'm hoping crossing them to the California male will help with making slightly more vigorous offspring, as they aren't related, then I can figure out some breeding plan for the offspring. So glad to have an unrelated male to breed them to though, even if it feels like I'm starting from square -1.

Pictures tomorrow. It gets dark way too early now.

I
I think alot of it comes from modern breeders that push the line it takes to much time and effort to try recreating a variety. They discouraged anyone that asks about it or how to or where to start their projects. It's so weird the disparities between old time breeders and the modern ones. More than one older breeder has said if you want a variety that instead of buying from them make it on your on so that we can have diversity in the bloodlines. All the modern breeders only say to buy from another breeders that has SOP birds. They don't encourage any kind of growth in the hobby or learning about how any chicken variety came to be. I'll be following older breeders to learn how to create the chickens I want and understand the time and work that is needed to do so.

I know it's kinda ranty but it's been irking me for a while now. How modern breeders and people that show discourage others from wanting to experiment or start from something that has a few good or great traits and make their own bloodline or variety. Easy is not always best. We don't always learn from easy. We won't get the fun unusual breeds and varietys back unless we experiment with what we have now.
I understand the interest in creating your on line of bcw polish. I myself was thinking of trying to create a black crested white silkie or a bcw polish as we dont have them in australia or option 3 a new breed altogether. The new breed would have the bcw colouring with blue/ green speckled eggs that look like dino eggs, silkie feathers with long legs and heat hardiness. As you can tell i dont want much of a challenge in my projects :wee:lau:lau:lau:lau:lau:lau.
