Black Debris on Eggs

Hello,

One of our chickens finally started laying recently and I have been noticing dark spots/debris on the egg shells. It is like dirt and comes off. There isn’t any dirt in the nesting box. Is this a sign of anything unwanted? I can’t seem to find this anywhere. Pictures included.

What material do you have in your nest boxes? I get specks of stuff like that all the time, it's just fine dirt that the chickens track in, and a little dust from the wood shavings I use in there.

2x It's probably "dirt" that's in their feathers from dust bathing. It's happened a couple times where they'd be dust bathing then decide it's time to go sit in the nest & don't shake off well.

I agree. Being a new layer, she maybe overly scratching around. I'd do a nesting box clean out & see if that is the fix.
