Hi all,

Hope some one could give me advice here ?

One of my hens currently laying on about 10 eggs, when she gets off for some food and water, huge amount of water, black in color would be defecated. this is now day 3 that I have noticed it other than that she is normal.

what comes out of her is anything but normal to me !

I feed them layer mash for a year now with the kitchen scraps....

any help or advice please

Broody hen poops are usually large, stinky and disgusting because they hold it in and just poop once a day. If your weather/nest box area is very warm/hot, it may be that your girl is drinking more than usual and that is causing a normal broody poop to be more watery. It can go quite dark just because of the extra time it is held inside the body. I would ferment some feed for her if you don't already or give her some scrambled egg with probiotics sprinkled on it, just to help improve her gut flora.
Just be sure to check that the poop is not dark red (indicating partially digested blood) rather than black. Blood would indicate a problem.

Can you post a picture?

I've seen mine poop black liquid. It was because they where eating ash from a wood pile. Can you remember anything black that you gave to them.

thank you for the welcome, thy have ash yes charcoal as well. its only the one hen.

Rebrascora, your explanation makes a lot of sense as the location she laid her eggs is very sunny and she is drinking a lot of water!

Thank you for the shares I appreciate it, she is doing fine ill observe her over the weekend to try and get a photo.

i feel i do not have to worry to much right?

I see that your reply was from several years old, but were you able to confirm the ash from a wood pile?? Our solo chicken seems to be in the same situation. What did you do about it?? TIA!

Yes, I had a few that started pooping black droppings once I added a wood ash dust pile to their pen, I had no deaths anytime near this either so I'm sure that it was caused by the wood ash. Besides the black poop is you chicken showing any other symptoms, have you fed them anything that may have caused their poop to change colors?

Her's is black and watery. She is unfortunately stressed, but no other symptoms.

Could you post a picture, why is she stressed?
I can post a photo tomorrow. It looks like black water. Nothing is floating in it. She is stressed because she is the only surviving chicken amongst ten Guinea fowl.

We had a small flock of eight. We lost our other chickens to hawks before we got the Guineas.
