One of my black drakes is going brown, most strikingly along his sides and rump. I've heard of black ducks (cayugas) going white, and muscovies color fading. Does this color shift happen with mallard derived breeds commonly? If I got him now I'd be wondering if he were a chocolate, but he was a coal-black baby. Does it suggest he carries chocolate? His mother is lavender.
My blue drake has a similar rusty tinge along the same parts, flanks and breast. I wonder if he is the father of the above drake (50/50 chance) is it a color fault, or should I be calling these guys 'tricolor'?
they are Anconas fwiw. I'd share photos but my iPhone camera doesn't do subtlety.
