Our 8 BEI's are looking kind of brownish. I'm a bit concerned why. We feed them Blue Seal Layer feed, which we're not too comfortable doing, because of the calcium and protein portions, but can't find anything that matches the recommended levels. They seem to like to nibble the mud a lot as well. Maybe that has something to do with it? Any thoughts?

When they "nibble" mud, its usually them getting bugs or worms.
 
I know my black chickens tend to get brown feathers right before they molt. It is something the sun does to them - kind of like sun fading.
