Black Fleshy Scab *PICTURES*

You might want to invest in a kitchen scale and start weighing her every few days. Also check with you vet regarding the Valbazen dose. What I have been told by a vet is that the most effective one day dose is 20mg per 2.2 pounds, which is ~0.2ml per 2.2 pounds.

I was the one that gave her the Valbazen but I used a different dosage that I got from another post. I just re-wormed her based on your info. and her weight. Will weigh her frequently and dose again in 10 days. Searched her for any other bumps or scabs and found nothing.

One more question, Kathy. Is Valbazen effective for treating giardia and if so, is the dosage different? I treated her yesterday using your guidelines for regular worming and was planning to dse again in ten days. Assuming the lump is just a pressure sore, I am revisiting all the other issues and thinking she might have giardia.

I have been very focused on this being an external parasite or laying issue and that is how my vet has treated it as well. I keep going back to the similarities between my case and another thread on feather loss where the issue turned out to be giardia. My chickens love to drink out of a very dirty tiny fish pond in our yard. I have noticed them standing on the rocks and then pooping in it. This hen in particular prefers it over the nice clean water in her Chicken Fountain.

I am trying to do as much of the work on this as possible. I have a vet that sees chickens but Houston is not a very chicken-friendly city and he doesn't get a lot of people bringing them in as pets. I feel like he is hesitant to treat. Plus, huge ongoing vet issue with our elderly cat that is adding up quickly so would like to put off taking the chicken back to the vet so soon.

Any advice you can give is MUCH appreciated!

Wish I could help with your chicken, but maybe I could help with the old cat. We have one who is 19 going on 20, and 10 other cats live here as well, I'm pretty good with cats. Not to redirect the topic just thought maybe I could help...

Probably best to talk with your vet about that, but if I had to guess, based on what I just read, I'd say that treatment would be 2-10 days of Valbazen, possibly with metronidazole, which you can buy OTC as Fish-Zole.

What does her poop look like?

Her poop is lots of clear water with small pieces of brown poop and then bits of partially digested grass and feed. I can hear it hit the ground.

Thank you, that's sweet. I am a cat person too.

She has had a significant and scary weight loss. She has been on thyroid medication for years. The lab work came back and said her thyroid and kidney function looked god but her white blood cell count was 69,000. So high that the vet called the lab to make sure they hadn't made a mistake. He said it sounds like leukemia but she is an indoor cat, not exposed to stange cats or boarded. She has a crazy appetite but continues to lose weight. He said one of her kidneys felt huge. He gave her an antibiotic and she will go back in a week for more blood work. He may insert a needle in her kidney to see if it's an abscess or tumor. I think she has cancer. If she does, we will love her until it's time to say goodbye.

I 've seen poops like that when they have bacterial or fungal infections, so giardia could too, I guess. Will your vet sell you some metronidazole (fish-zole)? If not, you could call some tropical fish stores and see if they have fish zole or something with the metronidazole in it. If they don't, petsmart and possibly petco have something called API General Cure that has 250mg metronidazole and 75mg praziquantil powder... Harder to use than pills, but doable.

These are 250mg tablets

These are 100mg tablets

Wow that's ruff. Poor girl. Cancer sucks, had a 2lb tumour taken out of one cat, had another with thyroid issues seen a lot of odd things. Hope it's not feluke although like you said indoor cat so not likely. Such a bummer wish I was a vet. If it is a tumour you could try ginseng extract it helps reduce tumour size. Worked well for my dog along side antibiotics and steroids. Best wishes.
