Black Jersey Giant Eggs

Just to let everyone know that is a standard size for Black Jersey Giants. These birds were bred to compete with the turkey market in the Northeast at the turn of the century by the Black brothers ( yes they are named after the brothers not because they are black). When caponized the cocks can attain amazing weight of 14 to even 20 pounds dressed IF you have the right strain. You cannot achieve such weight with normal run of the mill hatchery stock so best to buy from a breeder as here.

And no 202RoosterLane you will not need a larger pen for these birds just allow 4 square feet per bird of coop space the run isn't as much an issue as Giants aren't the most active birds.

And spydertoys could you PM me and tell me about your line of Blacks (where they originate from, average hen and cock size at 1 yr/2yr and size/wt of eggs and quantity your hens are laying annually. I am always looking for contacts with good Giants. Thanks

Good to know, thank you! The are larger than what I am used to. I have all sizes but I hope these will be my largest. I have never shown chickens in a county fair but I might with one of these just for fun.

Is your avatar of your house right now? Wow so awesome! But please do not send snow to Arkansas.

I don't keep track of all that. I can tell you that my original stock was purchased from several breeders who do show their birds, as with all my stock, that's where I look for them. I am not claiming mine are show quality, but I do know that they have no hatchery background and that is what pleases me. Because I buy from show stock, the birds generally look like they are supposed to.
I don't weigh them, I don't keep track of how many eggs I get. They are considered pets and are not sold because they don't lay enough eggs. Jerseys are one of my favorites because I like my big birds..and they are BIG! birds with sweet dispositions..that's what matters most to me.

I totally agree. Some people are very serious about show birds and I can understand that. But sometimes they are what they are, just great chickens.

Yes 202 that's part of my great old stone farm house and no I won't send any snow your way. I didn't appreciate that snow which we got at the end of October but it looks pretty from inside. Thanks for the response spydertoys I appreciate your candor in the matter. I am seeking three specific lines of birds which is why I inquired. Cheers

I have some I got from another Jersey Giant Club member here in Virginia who got his stock from the Vaughns. My original ones came from Maria Hall. I'm really excited because this spring I am going to hatch some chicks using my "keepers" from my first generation of birds hatched on my farm- a splash cockerel and a blue pullet, some using the original stock from Maria Hall, and some from the other Virginia breeder's line. I've actually got a batch in the incubator now. What lines are you looking for? I have all of the club members' contact info that was current as of February last year, and there are a couple of breeders listed in Pennsylvania. PM me and I can send you that contact info if you like.

We absolutely love our Jersey Giants. If anyone is looking for hatching eggs or chicks in the future, we do offer some on our website too. We carry blue, black and splash. Later on, I may have a pen of just blacks in case someone does not want the blue or splash Giants.

This is a picture of two of our 8 month old roosters.
