The Maticoopx 30 just finished a great hatch—18 out of 18 chicks hatched from my new DNA line of Jersey Giants, and 11 out of 12 hatched from my Jersey Giant × (JG, Brahma, or Sapphire Gem) cross batch. One egg from the mixed batch hasn't hatched yet, but it's fully developed and I'm giving it more time. I still expect it to hatch.

🔍 Incubation Notes:

  • Over my past three incubations, I averaged around 50% hatch rate.
  • This time, I used Govee hygrometers/thermometers and had to set the Maticoopx to 100.5°F to hold a true 99.5°F average (actual average was 99.8°F).
  • I believe most of my earlier failures were due to infertile eggs, not incubation error—only 2 or 3 viable embryos failed to hatch in previous runs.

My mixes are very good looking also, Ill post some pics of them soon.

(Edit) I forget I did hatch 11 of 11 duck eggs before this but thought that was a fluke.

I’ve been working on improving my candling skills, especially with the darker and blue eggs, and I’m getting better with each hatch. In my first couple of attempts, I wasn’t very confident in what I was seeing, but going forward I’ll leave out any clearly unfertilized eggs from my count.

I’ve got a couple more batches in progress—if that’s the right term for a round of eggs in the incubator. They’re due to go into lockdown in about 3 and 7 days, and each group had very different handling before incubation. We’ll see how that affects the hatch.
