A couple of my chickens have what looks like a little bit of tar on their combs. I don't know where they could have gotten into tar. Are there parasites that turn their combs black?

In my experience, it is scabbing. Have your roosters fought at all? I had an OEGB rooster get loose one day and by the time I realized it he had fought with my standard cochin roo through the fence...both boys had black/brown scabs all over their faces and combs. ?

ETA: hens will fight too and scab each other... [IMG]

My Roo's have it to , also purple color like the black gives way to purple. My black tar like spots and patchs are most prevalent on the Roo's. What is it ? And how can we treat it?

One of my hens have that and I believe it is scabs from being pecked. She is the bottom of the pecking order. It doesn't seem to bother her, they just go away.
