We are new to chickens - our summer rental flock arrive 48 hours ago! Now, one of the ladies is showing a black growth/matter on her beak. Is this something we should be concerned about, should treat in some way, or should not worry about at all? Also, she is sitting in the run with her head tucked under her wing. We are worried that this is not normal. Thank you!

Agreed that it looks like blood. To confirm you can use a moist qtip (just have a lot of qtips and a warm cup of water ready) to rub along the discoloration- by smell and appearance you should be able to see if it's blood. At least clean all of it off and see if any more appears - and I would notify the person who dropped them off.

Based on the picture, I recognize your hen in question.
Your daughter has already received help in her posting. Plus, she was Strongly advised to build a bigger run because their are too many hens in that tiny space.

Thanks so much! We rented for the summer as a trial before getting our own; this group was together with the last renter. We have contacted the owner about this, but of course want to make sure we care for them in the mean time. They (four) all went into the coop to roost for the night, so we are hoping she's ok!
