I know not a lot about US araucanas (or ameraucanas). To my untrained eye they look like nice birds. I can't help thinking that none of the colours look very "pure". They each look more or less like the colour the person states but with extra genes which wouldn't, ordinarily, be in that colour. What's going on there?
Or are the colours expected of a variety in araucanas different to those colours expected of the same variety name in other breeds?

The "golden duckwing", on the proper araucana breedclub site, looks more like the colour Tim described; the hackles look lighter than I'd expect from what I know as "golden duckwing.

I finally, after much struggle, got an answer about silver vs golden vs BBR (e+) hens over at the ACA forum.

Here's the general story, from what they've said --

In araucanas, golden duckwing is generally S/s+. Therefore, obviously, het roos will produce both S and s+ pullets.

The lighter gray S pullets get called "silver".
The darker gray S pullets get called "golden", even though they have no s+.
The s+ pullets get called BBR.

I don't know what other breeds do, or if even all araucana breeders handle their genetics this way -- but that's the story I got, in any case!

So, the moral of the story as it applies to my flock -- I'll put all the salmon-breasted hens and pullets in my "duckwing" pen for now. I'll worry about separating them into golds and silvers after (if) I produce some silver duckwing roos. I may also set up a large dog crate for some pair breeding with my original (S/s+) roo and one of the really silvery pullets. All the girls with brown breasts, I'll throw in with the BBR cockerel. Some of those also have blue -- I'll decide what to do with that later!
