Black Preen Gland

I butchered one of our chickens. She was a black laying hen over a year old. When I removed the preen glad from the tail it was black instead of the usual yellow color. Is this a sign that the bird was sick? Could it be because she was a black hen? I've done this to other black birds before but never had this show up before.
