Black Rock?

X2,i'm not sure what will happen if a barred rock mates with a black sex link rooster, now I am curious
I've done bsl roo over barred rock hen. It's complicated to explain.......
The roo has one barring gene, so half his chicks are barred, regardless of gender.
The hen has one barring gene, that only goes to male offspring.
So, you can get double barred roosters, that look pure barred rock, lighter colored.
You can get half barred roosters, that look like black sex links or even less barring, but still barred.
you can get barred hens, that look like a regular barred rock. Barring gene from sire, none from dam.
You can get what is technically black sex link hens, with no barring from the father and no barring from the mother. Mine are solid black.

I've loved having a part barred rooster (actually have 3 right now in the main pen) cause I get some really pretty part barred mixes.

Hmm I didn't know that. I thought a red rooster was used to create the red sexlink and black rooster for black sexlink. I use BCM rooster and barred rock hens to create my black sexlink.
Red sex link--red rooster over silver hen
Black sex link--basically non-barred rooster over barred hen. Lots of different roosters can be used by the backyard breeder. Hatcheries are breeding for production, so they tend to use a hatchery Red rooster.

The "dead" egg was the same as the others when I candled them a week back, but I checked them today and it never progressed past a black dot, while the rest are all near pitch black and can't see through them. They're on day 16, so it's close to lockdown time.

I found this article that goes into details of where the coloration is located on the genes http://kippenjungle.nl/basisEN.htm.

Thank you for explaining it to me. I love learning about stuff like this, but usually people put in terms that I dont understnad lol!
You're welcome. I have a very basic understanding of chicken genetics, but when the more educated folks start throwing the different symbols for the colors around, things like that, I'm pretty lost!

So four have hatched successfully. One actually has a white dot on the head. The others are mostly black with some yellow/white down on the front of the necks, bellies, and wing tips.

One more hopefully to go!

Update. Only four hatched. Last one died, it appears, a few days before lockdown. Gave it a few more days but nothing. My less than broody hens had zero make it. In fact I gave up on them and put them in the bator and two days later one exploded. Stinky! Hopefully doesn't compromise the turkey eggs in there rt now.
