Hi everyone,
I am sadly still on a long and arduous bumblefoot journey with two of my chickens. One had an extremely bad case which has been operated numerous times now by our vet and has made a lot of progress. We're still on epsom baths every day for both girls, and foot wraps with honey or antiseptic. I'm wondering if anyone has tried black salve (https://thefrugalchicken.com/amish-black-drawing-salve-homemade-recipe/) to help draw out the infection in a bumblefoot case? Could it be useful in either of these cases?
Chicken 1: I have been advised that in her case she could take up to a year to heal completely. She currently has a large wound with a part of a black scab and some solid puss still forming which we are working away at as best we can and filling with honey in between. Her foot is literally half the size that it was at the beginning, she even needed stitches to close the original wound it was so big. We aren't too worried though as there isn't much swelling.
Chicken 2: A minor case; one foot completely healed and the other is on it's way. She didn't need major surgery but we got the 'bumble' out and there wasn't any puss underneath. Though now there's a scab over it and her foot is quite swollen and puffed up all around and between her toes. It's been like that for a few weeks and we're periodically tempted to peel the scab off as one time we did this it was full of liquid puss
. Should we just leave it alone now? How can we get rid of the infection if there's no puss to get out? We're worried that if we leave it it'll go hard and we'll need to operate.
I'll take pictures tomorrow.
