Has anyone on here heard of a black sex-link going broody? I thought that this is a hybrid breed that supposed to be a super egg layer? Its the funniest thing. For the past 3 days, she just sits in the nest box, and when ever you go near her, she screams at you!! I take her out, and put her in the run (pen). What's up with her anyway?

Mine never went broody, but come to think of it...they never had any eggs to sit on b/c we were collecting them all. I was told by a friend today that her BSL was the only bird she had that would hatch chicks for her. She said that they had a community laying bin, and the BSL would steal and roll the others eggs to her side to hatch them!!

I found this thread today because my BSL went broody yesterday. She had been the 'favorite' of our rooster for months, so there seems to be at least a chance of a viable egg or two.
We have no experience with a broody hen, so I'm reading all I can find on the subject.
b. hromada, did your BSL ever become a mama? What happened?

UPDATE: The broody BSL hen lost interest for a few weeks and abandoned the eggs, but now she's back on the nest with new eggs. All was well with three fertilized eggs until one of them broke. We didn't know what had happened when she came running and squawking out of the coop. I thought there was a wasp or something that stung her. There were no wasps, just a broken egg with a very small embryo.
So then there were two, and she sat on them for several days. We thought all was well until she came flying out of the coop again this morning. This time the broken egg contained a larger embryo with recognizable features. We cleaned up the mess once again and replaced the bedding material. Now there's just one, and I'm not very hopeful. The shells all seemed good with a uniform shape. Is she pecking at them? If so, why?

Oh no! :( Hopefully someone can help. I have no experience with broody hens or hatching. My have 2 RSL and 2 BSL, I've also read that they rarely go broody but it's certainly not completely out of the question.

Wish I could offer some help, but I'm in the dark about what to expect next. So far it hasn't been good. I've read that broodiness and motherhood has been bred out of many breeds and incubation is the only way to hatch them. My BSL has not gone back to sitting on the last egg yet this morning. I may have to take it and try to keep it warm myself. It's all an experiment around here.

I had one go broody about a week ago. She had 4 eggs, so I gave her 8 more. Now we wait. I didnt think there was much chance of them going broody either, but she rarely leaves this particular nesting box, and if she does leave, she goes right back to it.

My first broody was a hen that was never suppose to go broody. She would have taken your arm off at the elbow, and raised chicks.

Thing is - not all the eggs make it, hence the old saying, "don't count your chickens until they hatch" If you get more than 50% call that a good hatch, less than 50% well, that is life.

If she does hatch, or even if none of them hatch, this time of year you can get chicks to slip under her. And she will raise them up in your flock and that is really fun.

Do slip them under her in the dark of night, let the chicks be a little chilled when you slip them under her, and they will stick like a tick to that warm spot.

21 days till hatch are the longest days ever!
