Black Sex-Link Picture Thread!

I received this girl in a group of Kindergarten hatched chicks...don't you love Kindergarten? lol! Anyway, I do believe that Olive is a BSL - I don't have any others that match her and looking at all of your pictures on this thread, she fits. She has feathers on her feet/legs, but that looks to be possible in BSLs as well? Anyway, let me know what you think - she's a neat hen - active and fun - and I do believe she's started laying. She would be around 17 weeks, which for my other heritage birds, crazy early!

Here's Olive!

Olive looks like my girls but sex links do not have feathered legs or feet. Maybe is a mix of sex link and something else....which would make her a super hybrid!

She probably is some kind of crazy mix - but she's fun! I think that she's mostly BSL, but perhaps some Marans in there too? Who knows - gotta love kinder chicks! lol!

The chick on the right is a jersey giant crossed with one of many things lol. Possibly barred rock, turken, jersey giant, Dominique, delaware, or a Wyandotte. But something looks very sexlink about the coloring. What do you all think?

Is this a Black Sex-link chicken?
I had to trade in another chicken because she turned out to be a he and we chose this one. The place where we got them said this was a black sex-link, but I kind of assumed that a "black" sex-link would be more black! You see this one has hardly any black at all... The chicken we traded in was called Raquel until we figured out she was really "Rocky". So now we call this one "R2"
She's very soft and sweet.
We have her quarantined for now in this dog crate, otherwise I would attempt a better photo.

Looks like a random mixed breed to me. Hatchery sourced black sexlinks are typically a cross between a Rhode Island Red rooster and a Barred Rock hen. They have a fairly predictable appearance. Home breeders can create black sexlinks by crossing just about any barred hen and any non-barred, non white rooster. Depending on what rooster is used, there can be quite a lot of variety in the resulting pullets. The male chicks will always be barred though. My black sexlink Easter Egger pullets are almost entirely black.
Not every breeder understands the genetics behind what makes those sexlink crosses work though, and some don't realize that you can't make black sexlinks by breeding sexlink birds together. They aren't a breed, they are a type of mix breed that uses a specific combination of genes from both the hen and the rooster that results in chicks that can be easily sexed at hatching, reliably.

she could be a buff orpington rooster crossed with barred rock....look at some very similar to her on the first couple page of this thread
