Beautiful Ohio
Silkie genetics gurus, please help as I am a newbie to Silkies. :/

I have a beautiful black silkie pullet who is about 4/5 months old and was looking to use her to possibly show this fall. She recently developed leakage on her hackles and possibly wings (can't tell if it's leakage or broken feathers?).

Is this leakage on her hackles and/or wings?

If so, what do I do with her now that she has leakage? I've read various posts about people still use leakage roosters or pullers with correct type and will still get solid clean babies. Some people cull or give them away as pet quality.

I'm breeding Paints and Cuckoo bearded Silkies so I'm using blacks to darken my Cuckoo and Paints. Will her leakage affect my Paints and Cuckoos?

She's not show ready in these pictures obviously ;) Her off days are spent free ranging and cage free..

I'm missing paint from my line. Do you ship day old chicks? I'm in Massachusetts.
Thank you.

Are you sure that's not a boy

Ahaaaa.. I hope not! :( So far, fingers crossed :fl, she has not crowed at all. All of my other roos have been crowing for at least a month. Could be a late bloomer though? I do see the roos occasionally do "their dance" around her. Not mounting or other behaviors yet. Her waddles and comb are tiny. Like, super small which is another great feature I love about her as I was hoping to breed her. :/

Any anyone confirm the leakage in the wing feathers? Is it leakage or just damaged feathers?

Just wanted to check back here and let you guys know that you dag-gum jinxed me!!! Doing chores this morning, my so called black pullet strutted out of her coop and began to crow. No more pullet. :lau :barnie:he

So, can only males get leakage on the hackles?

That is a tale tale sign when the bird gets leakage in the hackles. It is a male. He will still be good for breeding in the paint coops as long as that leakage is silver and not gold. Gold leakage will dirty up the white on the paints whereas silver will clean up the white coloring. Hope that helps.

Your bird is lovely, but not show quality with the colour leakage, but she would make a lovely broody hen. Nice quality feathering. Enjoy her! ☺
