Black silkie purchase

Okay, she replied and said she couldn't get any pictures of the blacks to email. However, she said the parents are from breeders and the roosters are at LEAST breeder quality, if not show.

It's really up to you, but to me the feet alone don't look impressive in the slightest. If you have the means to, hatching eggs from reputable breeders, or even breeders on BYC might be your route, or talking to BYCers with breeder birds in your price range.

I'd rather spend a little more money on a better bird than spend a less on one that is not so great, if breeding is your goal. If given time to fill out, the bird in question could turn out a little better, but that's a flexible *could*. Only my opinion, but I'd continue the search. My mom always taught me, don't buy anything unless you 100% have no doubts.

Yes, I noticed that the feet looked kind of lacking in feathers. I think I'll take everyone's advice and look around for some better quality birds. My goal is mainly breeding, but I do show several times a year in small local shows. Since I have a limited budget do ya'll think I should buy hatching eggs, chicks, or started birds?

I'll be honest: maybe ya'll have far better eyesight than I do with my 20/20 vision in glasses, but i can't see enough detail in that itty bitty pic to know quality. Maybe a bigger pic and I can give an honest opinion? No offense to the op, I just can't see much more than a fuzzy black bird...and I see a total of like, 3 toes sticking out, so if that's the extent of the pic, I just can't give an educated guess and I'm confused how anyone else could either.

Well, I already emailed the lady and told her I didn't want to buy it after all. So I won't be able to get any better pictures.

Keep your eyes on auctions on here, and lurk the Silkie thread for a while. But also, do a little research on what a quality Silkie is. Just because it comes from a breeder, it does not mean that a large amount of the birds are really what you want. Case in point: I was in a similar position. I wanted to work with Silkies mainly for showing in small shows (I'm in 4H), and I wanted quality, but not to spend a huge amount of money on a few birds. (When you're my age, all of your money comes from babysitting and holidays.) I went to a local show, and in the beginning I only found one breeder selling, and those birds were not impressive. They had poor type, they were standing all over each other (not very appealing when they're covered in poop) and I wasn't willing to spend $15 each on that. My favorite of the bunch was even poorly colored. Sulking, I decided to pass. I went back to the show tent, and when I saw a guy grooming a very nice pullet, I introduced myself and asked if he was selling. He said I caught him at a good time because he actually brought 3 blacks with him that day to sell off. When he brought them out, they were so clean and smelled nice and very fuzzy. He wanted $100 for them but said he'd be happy with $80.

They are not the best. 1 was a cull from day 1 because of color (the guy told me ahead of time, and said that bird really wasn't included in the price) so I was left with a pair. Both of whom have their small faults, but generally are not bad. And both have proved thsemselves in small shows. Later on I ended up buying another bird from him at around $45 and he even gave me a pullet for free. Sometimes the best situations are the ones that you have to wait for.

We've tried it all, hatching eggs, chicks, started and adult birds. Our best purchases overall have been the started and adult. Ultimately cheaper when you factor in all the money for eggs that didn't hatch and chicks that didn't work out. Some of the more expensive birds were bought basically on lay-away. Start setting a little aside.....maybe $5 a week and keep looking. Then when the right one comes along, you're ready and can get exactly what you want.

I think the easiest thing to do right now is to keep my eyes open for sikies at local shows. I have decided to get a full-grown sikie so I will know for sure the gender and quality. Thanks for all the advice!
