Hi I have a black silkie rooster in a coop with 2 white silkie hens, a buff silkie hen and two polish hens.
I hatched 13 chicks and they are all black gray and one is black with a little buff. Do I need to get a different color rooster to get lighter chicks? I know nothing about this as you can tell

Ok thanks, any suggestions on what color would produce the best colored chicks since I can only have one rooster:he:he

The Polish with black feathers will probably produce black chicks with any rooster.

With your other hens, I would suggest you get a rooster that shows at least two colors in his feathers, with a good amount of each color.

One with some "blue" (gray color, like your middle bird) and also some red or gold would probably make chicks with the most different colors.

(If you want to learn about chicken genetics, I can provide some links. It can be complicated, which is either fun or annoying depending on who you ask. But if you just want colorful chicks without learning genetics, find a rooster who shows a good amount of at least two colors in his feathers, and he should have a set of genes that work for your purpose.)
