I got this hen from a friend yesterday. She's currently living in my garage. Can anyone tell me what the black specs on her comb are?

They're just scabs. Nothing to worry about. In a few days they will be gone. She most likely got them free ranging. BTW she's beautiful!

Phew! None of my other chickens have had this, I'm so glad it's nothing! Thanks!

I agree. You'll likely see them on your other chickens from time to time. As old ones disappear, new ones pop up.

I always wondered what those were from.... what are they doing while free ranging that they're getting this? Is it from hanging out in the rose bushes?

I assume they can also be from other chickens pecking at her. I'm not sure what her living conditions were at her last home.

Rose bush thorns, other thorns, toothy leaves and stems, other chickens pecking her, mosquito bites....anything that could knick you on the head if you were free ranging around that low to the ground.
