Help! All my hens are less than a year. I noticed one of them developed black spots on her comb and chucked it up to scabs from pecking when they’re settling in for the night on the roost as they didn’t seem to bother her and she is/was in really good health otherwise. Well last night we noticed her comb start to purple and this morning another of our hens has started to develop spots too! 😓
What can we do to get them back to full health? Not sure I’m ready for the culling portion chicken care.

Those girls are a long way from needing culling. Where are you located, and what is your present weather ?

It does look like pecking to me. May be happening on the roosts when they wrestle for roosting space. A consistently purplish or dark comb could indicate a heart problem (not enough oxygen) but it can also happen during times of stress or excitement and will resolve and is not really a concern. If all else seems fine and normal, I would just keep an eye on it, it may be a passing thing.

I’m in North Texas, Dallas area. We just got past a cold snap and the temperatures are settling into the mid 60s during the day. The spots have been on the one for probably a month now But her comb only started turning purple yesterday when it’s actually been getting warmer.
