We have a black star (black sex link) hen who is 14 months old. She is in a pen with 3 other hens of the same age, and up until a couple days ago, there was a same aged rooster as well. All of them have been hand raised from a day old and very friendly.

A week or more ago, one of the hens has become somewhat aggressive toward people. This started BEFORE we removed the rooster from the pen so I'm not relating it to him being gone and her taking over. This hen used to be very docile and friendly, now when you go in the pen (especially if you kneel down to give treats or pay attention to anyone) she gets all in your business and will peck at you. She also stands up tall with her chest poked out and "challenges" you too when she thinks youre trying to push her away.

She is NOT protecting eggs or even paying attention to any eggs. Other than this aggressive behavior toward people, she seems to be acting normal otherwise. Since she's in with other laying hens it is only a guessing game as to if she's laying. If needed, I can separate her within the pen for several days to see if she is (we have a small pen within the pen).

Is she going broody even though she has no interest in the eggs? Or is something else going on? If this had started without a rooster in the group, I would think she's trying to take over the flock, but she started this before he was gone. She is not aggressive toward the other hens.

Any thoughts?

Even toward people? What can/should I do to stop it? She's pretty relentless. Its such a sudden change too.

I am having the same issue. I have a Partridge Cochin and in the past two weeks, she has really started to become vocal. This week, she is going for the jugular. We only have one other chicken, who is younger (thereby smaller) and she (possibly a he) is actually the more dominate. I have no clue what is going on. She hasn't started laying eggs and so I am hoping that is why she has her panties in a wad. Shrug.
I hope others respond with some insight.

I'd separate her and see if she is laying. Did I read that right? You are not 100% sure she lays? I'd sure want to know that fact. If she is a good layer of 6 eggs a week, she's worth dealing with. If she is not laying or is only laying 3 eggs a week, she isn't pulling her weight or paying for her feed. Just sayin'.
Start with that. The separation might also do her good as to her behavior. It might take her down a notch.

I have heard that if you have an aggressive rooster you can pick them up and hold them until they stop resisting and that show dominance over them I am guessing it would also work for a hen?

I had a BR that was getting aggressive with me, a few gentle "pecks" with my hand, plus holding her and giving her treats while I was holding her cured it within a week. Good luck!
