I have some Black Star hens that my son would like to show. Does anyone know if they are a recognized breed by APA standards? If so, can you tell me where to find the standards? We have a Standards of Perfection book from 2001 and they are not in there. Some of mine have brown eyes and some black. Also, some have gold on their chest and some do not. Just wondering what a true example should look like. Thanks.

Unfortunately, black stars are mutts. They are an egg laying cross link that is made to be feather sexable as chicks. However, if your son is involved in 4H or something, he may be able to show them anyway, with points for winning based more on showmanship.

Yep. They have to be able to continuously bred through the same breed to be recognized.

Missy3b,
You may want to check with you 4-H group, but there should be a Production Egg Laying class you can enter them in...
