Hi everyone! im getting baby chicks very soon! mixed heritage breed and unsexed, will have to get rid of roosters but if anyone near Adelaide SA wants some or knows someone who does i might be able to give you some.
Any advice

My advice with chicks is to have the brooder ready, provide electrolytes for the first half a day then plain water, and have NutriDrench on hand just in case. It helps to dip a few of their beaks in the water as soon as you put them in the brooder so they know where it is and the others will get the idea.

Adding to the above, put marbles or clean pea gravel in the water so it's shallower and the chicks don't risk drowning if they were to, say, trip and fall in.
Also make sure they have an area of the brooder where they can get away from any heat sources you provide.

Or use a quail chick waterer as it's wide enough for a bird to drink but too narrow for them to drown in even without marbles

At the second hand store, I always get table place mats for new hatched chicks and toss when soiled. Or sometimes cloth napkins. Being mindful of anything they may catch their toes on. I don't like wood chips when little because it is confusing for them before they learn to eat. I also if I get chicks from a feed store request they don't put any wood chips in the take home box.
I also put a pie plate under the water.

When little I put feed on the floor, then when they get used to eating a couple days later, I use one side of an egg carton for feeder.
And below i like to make beds out of a cracker box, tiny stitches, and when one side is soiled turn over, when the other side is soiled, I toss.
