I'm guessing this is a fungus or disease of some kind? My 3 Leghorn hens have a little bit of black scab-like stuff on their combs. It's been that way for months. Just yesterday I noticed my EE roos has a lot of black on his otherwise red comb. The 2 EE hens in this flock don't have any black.

They have all been together since babies in March.

Will it spread and should I treat it? What is it?

I googled pics of fowl pox just in curiosity and I don't think it's that. Fowl pox is bumpy and can be on other parts of the chickens face.

I will try to get a pic of my chickens and put it on here.

Some of my chickens have tiny black speckles on their combs. These speckles have not grown in size, and don't seem to really be affecting anything. I figured it was just dirt or dead cells.

Well, the tiny black specks on the combs turned out to be a fungal infection. Nothing changed much until just a few days ago. I noticed more black spots, and then a little bit of white on the combs. Luckily, the links Eggcessive provided showed me what to look for, and I recognized what was going on immediately, and have managed to treat the chickens in need. I am keeping a close eye on them now. Thanks for this thread, without it I wouldn't have picked up on this infection until it was much worse!
