Hi everyone I was a veterinary technician for a few years I recently lost a Tom to blackhead if you think you have black head in one of your birds contact a local vet and ask him to prescribe metronidazole I believe the brand name is Flagyl also you can deworm your birds with panacur or safeguard because you have to kill the worm and you have to treat the disease I can help with dosing instructions if needed and if you don't know what killed your birds you can take it to a state lab and get a necropsy done relatively cheap Best of luck

Thank you very much, I have heard of Blackhead in turkeys but, I thought it was caused by disease not parasites. I understand chickens can be carriers. Since you were a
tech, I think you would make a good addition to the folks who respond to posts on the "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures," thread. Welcome to Backyard chickens.

Welcome, glad you have joined us. But, so sorry about the loss of your Turkey.

Thanks for info, although we have a large number of members with Turkeys, I don't think most realize this can transfer to chickens, especially in a mixed poultry flock.

Hope you plan to be active on BYC!

Blackhead is a disease but it is caused by the Cecil worm which is carried by chickens turkeys and other fowl it can even be carried by wild birds The blackhead weakens the bird and made other diseases that they were carrying come out tenfold such as hepatitis I could not find a vet in the area To treat turkey's however I got ahold of the vet I used to work for and took my dead bird to the state lab and had a necropsy done for $30 when I indeed found out it was blackhead I called a mobile vet and hade him prescribe metronidazole I also dewormed with panacur because you have to treat the disease and kill the worm
