I haven't been posting because I've been on the road with the hubby in the semi doing long haul, so no critters except the two dogs... but right now I'm visiting my brother, and he has a big spoiled flock of chickens. Point is: last spring he decided to try his hand at turkeys. He bought three, all intended for meat. They've been so pleasant and tame he really wants to try more again next year. Problem is, it's not really plausable to keep them separate from the chickens. The biggest one is doing really well, but then he was telling me that the other two were "limping" and he thought they may have jumped from too high of a perch. Well, I got here, and they looked more like how I feel when I having bad menstrual cramps. Feces are fine, they're eating fine, they just look like they're in pain. So we butchered the one that's been acting the worst today. Everything looked fine except the liver. Very pale, like tan colored. And after looking it up I'm pretty sure it must have been blackhead. I'm reading (here and other places) that it's a single cell parasite, and that it can be treated and prevented by putting the right medications (or hot pepper) in their water and food. That's good to know.
My question is, are they still edible if they have it? The one we butchered today looked great except for the liver. My niece already cooked up and ate the gizzard.. haha!
