Just keep in mind that you will want to do 2 coats of Black Jack (just 1 coat is a little patchy). I think I only waited 3 days between coats, so it was still slightly tacky when stepped on, and the chickens were probably in about 10 days after that.

Yep, I did 2 coats as well. My humidity at the time was about 60% and hi temps were about 70, I was able to do the second coat in 24 hrs. It was slightly tacky but not bad, nothing stuck to my shoes or me. I put my bedding and chicks in about 7 - 10 days later.

Thanks again everyone, super helpful. I'll go down to the hardware store today, see what I can find, and make my final decision. Tomorrow I will rig up a bigger brooder for the chicks. That will buy me some time, I guess, if I choose the blackjack and it takes a long time to dry.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the advice! I turned the can upside down for a few days, mixed it for about 15 minutes by hand when I was ready to start, and it wasn't too hard to work with at all, not much harder than paint. I've applied two coats, let it sit overnight, and it seems dry enough to walk on already. I guess I'll let it cure for a week or so, and I hope the floor will be ready to go....? Now to put hardware cloth over the windows...and to build the run.

It looks great, I'm glad it worked out well for you!

As long as you let it cure for a week, I think you will be fine to walk on it. You will know by how tacky it feels when you step on it. When I did mine, I put some shavings down after a week and walked on them, they didn't stick, so I put enough down to cover the floor and moved the chicks in. Once your floor is good to go and you get your coop secure from predators, you could move them in, even if your run isn't done.

Yeppers....that's what I did, will get you going on that run.
Then by the time the run is done, took me two weeks, the birds are 'homed' to the coop.

Yes, I cannot wait to get the chicks out of the garage. I haven't seen them under the heat plate in days, and they will be much happier out there, I'm sure. It is hard to wait because the floor feels quite dry. I walked on it yesterday just long enough to get the masking tape off the walls, and it seemed to do fine, but I'll wait out the week. I'm sure the chicks will add moisture, and I don't want to mess anything up.

Great thread. Now I'm not as nervous about using blackjack. I'm sure mine won't look as pretty. Doubt I'll be taping off. I'm just happy to get the floor sealed
