I'm trying to come up with ways to protect the floor and read that someone used this stuff. Is it safe once cured? I am picturing the chickens sitting in the hot coop breathing in that stuff.

Once it's cured, your chickens will make more smell than the 57.
:gigThat's for sure!

Should be fine if it's applied and fully cured in moderate temps...
...it'll be covered with bedding anyway, correct?

Pierce T Woods (of Woods coop fame) recommended coating the floors with creosote to deter both mites and rats. Granted they did not think much about health effects in the early 1900s but if there had been a negative effect I guess that it would be well known. BJ57 is much less toxic than creosote.

I have it in my coop. There is not much odor, even when applying it. I don't remember it having much odor the next day when I did the second coat, it's been a few years. Most paints have more odor than BJ57, IMO.

If you decide to use BJ57, turn the can upside down 1 - 2 days before you use it. This will make stirring it easier. All the thick stuff on the bottom will drip toward the lid and won't be as thick on the bottom of the can. I used a five gallon can, it took about 15 minutes to get it stirred, with a piece of 5/4 board. I used a 4 inch brush to put it on the walls and the floor. Full cure is 7 -14 days depending on temps and humidity. You can find info on the BJ website about that. If I remember right optimal applying/drying is 70 deg with < 50% humidity. My coop is 8 x 12.
