Blackjack 57

I used a roofing brush to apply blackjack to the floor of my coop, and just regular paint brushes on the walls, small or large, depending on where I was painting. Pallets and wire mesh seem really frustrating to paint over. Maybe there's some kind of exterior spray paint that would protect those areas that are hard to reach w/a brush?

Actually I painted the walls blue before painting the blackjack so maybe I'll be ok. I am going to lay another coat on the floor.

I used it in my 8x10 coop and on the poop boards. I put one coat down, waited a few hours, then put another coat down and that was it. IIRC it was just a few days later I put the pine shavings in and the chicks. I didn’t wait even 7 days for it to cure. No issues with anything.

7 days? I might try 10 if we don't get too much rain.

The second coat should go on much easier, as the Black Jack sticks to itself pretty well.

The wall paint may or may not cause issues (since Black Jack is meant to go on bare surfaces), but hopefully since it's walls instead of floor it'll stick ok since it's not something that will be getting scraped at regularly.

Good info here on the #57.

I just finished doing 2 coats on my coop project. Drying time was very minimal, but the key is that the Black Jack #57 must be well mixed prior to application.

If you buy in the 5 gallon bucket, any paint store can put this into their shaker machine. It's a standard size 5 gallon bucket. Lowe's mixed mine so well that when I first opened the bucket there was virtually no separation of any of the solvents, etc.

Buy a mixer bit for your cordless drill and mix for several minutes before each use.

I painted the floor, 12" up the walls, the bottom of the nesting box, and of course the bottom of the poop tray.

Good stuff.

When I did mine a few years ago, Lowes wouldn't mix it. They said it's not the same as mixing a 5 gallon bucket of paint, because it's so thick on the bottom(unlike paint). They said it could damage the machine. Also back when I did mine some people were lucky to get their store to mix it, that's why I asked when I bought mine. It wasn't to bad to mix by hand, since I had it turned upside down for a couple of days to let all the sediment break loose from the bottom.

I asked lowes to mix it. They said they weren't allowed to. I turned it upside down for a couple weeks (because of weather). I mixed it by hand using the long paint stirring stick. I had to use it like a knife rather than a paddle to cut through and then lift the sediment remaining on the bottom. It took about 15 minutes or so. I wore those yellow kitchen/dishwashing gloves thankfully.

I didn't paint the floor but there are some spots where paint spray settled or spilled. Nothing major so I'm going to hope the blackjack is ok.

It's a coop.
