blahhhhh pffffft

The economy has hit a lot of people hard. It doesn't mean they're irresponsible.

This! Unless you would have hard and fast proof that the potential buyer is not capable of caring for chickens what do you base your judgement on? Circumstantial evidence that holds no water whatsoever. It's the same as saying to me that I can't have an ipod because I'm old and I don't know how to handle it and I will break it.

Also - once you sell your chicks they are no longer your responsibility. They may be cared for in a way different from what you would do, but that doesn't mean that it would harm their welfare. There is a million different ways of doing things, so even if the buyer wouldn't have the setup that you would want him to have it doesn't necessarily mean that he will not be caring for them appropriately.

I was unemployed for 8 MONTHS.Most people who know me on here know this. and we rent to own our home. But we still cared for our 50+ birds besides that with no feed or med worries.

Money doesnt buy trust, commitment, honesty,or fairness. To be labled because of no steady income or renting is plain bad. If you are unsure, have a contract made and have him fill it out.

one rule of mine is people who do judge me because of my income dont become my friends.

I raise and sell chickens and quail. Sell hatching eggs. It was a hobby before, but last year my husband died. This is how I help pay my bills and make money to feed my birds. I also rent, since we were in escrow at the time he died and since he was the only one with an income I couldn't buy our home.

Maybe those chicks are needed for eggs to help his family survive.

Please do not be prejudice just because they rent. We are renters and provided a wonderful home to 3 birds, 1 dog, 1 grand baby - Sophie. We love the birds and they will be with us to the end. I do believe you need to feel comfortable with the homes you give your babies to. Thats the only responsible thing to do anyway.

A.T. Hagan :

Sounds to me like breeding and selling chicks may not be the thing for you.

X2............... if a customer has the cash and you said he had first pick then by going back on your word, well............. that's not very good for you ( breach of verbal contract ). Who cares what he does with them once he owns them their his he can do as he pleases. Not to mention you are discriminating against this fellow, I know you want everybody who reads this thread to take your side but by delving into his personal history is a little on the wierd side. I agree you can do as you please and sell to whomever you please for whatever reason that is totaly up to you, but it still doesn't make it right, perhaps selling the chicks should be re-evaluated .

I don't breed (chickens, dogs, cats, anything) due to the dilemma you've found yourself in tadandrita - I would stress out about the homes they would go to.
I would ask him if his landlord is okay with chickens. If so, then the money isn't nearly as much of an issue - many people put their animals first, even when money is tight. But if his landlord doesn't know he's getting chickens, or is against it, then I'd just be honest that you're not comfortable selling them into a situation where he might have to get rid of them a few months down the road.
Of course you know that whomever you sell them to could eventually eat them or resell them too.

That's the way things go with chickens.
