Blanketing Horses

I don't blanket, but I don't show so??? I actually love winter coats, I think they are beautiful! My oldest walker is starting to get fuzzy and i love it.

for my retired TB I put the waterproof rain sheet on him when the temps start dipping below 55.
The heavy weight turnout goes on 24/7 when the snow and freezing rain starts falling, because it is always accompanied by severe wind where we are. Granted this year he can be locked into his stall. BUt it is a two stall shed row. Not a full barn. Heavy weight doesnt come off until the temps and weather improves(April)

He still grows a decent coat, but it is easier to shed him out come spring.

Seriously - how long does it take to get everyone's blanket on.

I'd still be out there on horse number 4!

By the time I got done, I could start taking them off again.

We have 2 nightwatch on the farm, the early shift and the late shift. On nights when blankets go on, their shifts overlap so the both of them work to get blankies on. Takes about an hour and a half.

I blanket my old horses when the nights are 40 or lower. Here in Arizona (at least us humans) our blood is thinner because of the heat in the summer. The younger ones do fine without blankets but I do put them in the barn when it is cold and wet outside. It makes me feel so much better and I can sleep at night knowing they are dry.
