Bleachwater *edit* not the likely cause of death, thanks!

*Warning, I am a newbie*

Is it possible that the fumes related to the bleach and not just the consumption that killed the bird?

I have read that chickens are very sensitive to fumes.

Just a reminder for the newbies, NEVER MIX AMONIA & BLEACH.

I just wanted to put this out there since someone suggested amonia to better kill germs and the topic is about bleach. Someone may think by combining the 2 you'll get a better cleaning solution. Bleach & amonia creates a toxic chlorine gas that will kill humans, let alone chickens.

Hi! I don't know. It could have been purely coincidental that the last thing I saw him do was drink out of the bucket of bleachwater. He was one of my 'homeless roosters' and spent the day roaming the yard/garden/woods with his pal Woodie --- and why he had access to the bucket.
He did have 'other issues'. He was having one of the heaviest molts I've ever seen here. I'd been giving him kittenfood and scrambled eggs every morning, hoping to regrow some feathers. Wasn't doing much good.

That was from a month ago when he still had *some* feathers. He and Woodie were ALWAYS together. Poor Woodie is wandering around trying to find a new pal, but no one will be his friend.
The freakiest thing, I guess, is I've never seen a standing-up-dead chicken before.

I didn't know bleach wouldn't kill cocci-whatevers. Thanks for that! I'll have to try ammonia.
And nevernevernever mix bleach and ammonia...
Thanks!

We always mix a couple of TBSP of bleach to all our waterers. It keeps them from turning green and none of my birds have ever been sick.

Is it possible that he died from heat stroke? Cause maybe he was so desparate for water -that is why he drank strongly chorinated water? Cause from what I have read chickens do not drink off flavored water at all. Just an idea. won't know for sure unless you have him examined.

So sorry for your loss, I would have been a bit unnerved by something like that if it had happenned to me.

Take care of you and yours.

Fumes from the bleach would have been minimal, almost no free CL2 at all, some smell but not enough to burn lungs.

I have seen chickens drink everything from latex paint to the most stagnent scum covered pond water you can imagine.

He had to have some over riding health issue, and it happened to hit him at that time.

I put a little (drops) bleach in the waterers myself, never a problem.

Oxine--seven / eight drops per 5 gallons. Keeps the green slime away..see the Shagbark site for a good read on the use of Oxine...good data:cool:

Although I use bleach too.........Estes Hatchery has it posted on their website to NEVER use bleach for feeders, waterers. I used bleach before I ever read that and I continue to use it since it's the only way I knew of to get the darn things clean. Just thought I'd mention it.

Newbie question. Why use bleach instead of hydrogen peroxide? Hydrogen peroxide kills everything and is generally non toxic. Recently we went through cocci and used HP after cleaning everything.

Just wondering if there is something wrong with using HP instead of bleach WRT chickens? Bleach is toxic and HP is used in water decontaminating purposes already.
