Hi everyone just need some advice as I'm a newish chicken keeper and never had to deal with this before. One of my girls was crouching down while another was pecking at her behind so I went in to rescue her and she had a bleeding bottom. whilst holding her a soft egg fell out and she seems fine now eating and wandering around and the other hen seems uninterested now. They are free to roam all day but ive not noticed any eggs from her for about a week but she could have been hiding them. Any advice would be fantastic.

Sounds like an egg laying problem. My chickens eat any soft-shelled eggs they lay, so maybe the other hen was just trying to eat any eggs laid (they learn how it works, and wait to eat them when they are laid). Make sure she is getting enough calcium.

Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Thanks for the reply. I did think that about the soft egg as they both gobbled it up after. But no idea why it's soft as they always have oyster shell egg shells and they roam free on grit. Very odd.

Sometimes there is just a glitch, sometimes a hen just has a reproductive tract problem. Try scrambling some eggs with finely ground shell in it for calcium.

Thank you I will try that. She's been fine all day but it's about the same time as yesterday and she's looking sorry for herself and bleeding a bit again. I feel quiet helpless.

From her vent I think. I checked earlier and there was nothing there but she's now crouching and raising her bottom and there's a bit of blood there. It's not as much as yesterday and it doesn't look swollen.

She probably has a broken egg in her or some other serious problem in her reproductive tract. Is it blood or could she have a prolapse? I would get her on antibiotics.
